The Truth & nothing but the Truth
Who’s right? Who’s wrong? How do we know?
The path is treacherous that leads to the Mountain of YHWH. Dead ends, pits and traps, steep cliffs, deep valleys, and many rocks that cause the seeker to stumble. There are multitudes of groups, peoples, congregations, etc. who are seeking to show their love for our great Creator. Some set in their ways, others constantly seeking spirit led guidance.
Look at modern day worshipers, who has “the Truth”? Do we have “the Truth”? What are we to do as worshipers? Lets look at scripture to help us gain a better understanding of what it means to worship our heavenly Father in Truth, and to live our lives in Truth.
15Do your utmost to present yourself approved to Elohim, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly handling the Word of Truth.
Short, simple and to the point. We are told to do everything in our power to grow in all facets of our lives, constantly working towards pleasing our awesome Father.
The Truth, what is it?
Truth, we all have preconceived ideas on its meaning and how it impacts our lives. The basic definition of “Truth” is fact, actuality, or reality. Do these definitions convey the meaning as shown in the scriptures? Let’s look to scripture to help us see what may be a deeper meaning of this word.
Truth in the Torah, writings, and prophets
What did the early writers believe to be “the Truth”? Lets start with the prophet Yirme’Yah and see what he wrote concerning “the Truth”.
“Diligently search the streets of Yerushalayim, and please look, and know and seek in her open places if you find a man, if there is anyone doing right-ruling, seeking the truth, then I shall pardon her. 2“Even when they say, ‘As YHWH lives,’ they swear falsely, for certain.” 3O YHWH, are Your eyes not on truth? You have smitten them, but they have not grieved. You have consumed them, but they have refused to receive instruction. They made their faces harder than rock, they refused to turn back.
Here Yah’weh tells Yirme’Yah to search Yerushalayim for even one man searching for “the Truth”. Unfortunately even after being chastised and warned there is not even one who was willing to receive instruction. Lets look a little farther to try and determine what instruction the people were refusing to listen to.
22“For I did not speak to your fathers, or command them in the day that I brought them out of the land of Mitsrayim, about matters of burnt offerings or slaughterings. 23“But this word I did command them, saying, ‘Obey My voice, and I shall be your Elohim, and you be My people. And walk in all the ways that I have commanded you, so that it be well with you.’ 24“But they did not obey or incline their ear, but walked in the counsels, in the stubbornness of their evil heart, and went backward and not forward. 25“From the day that your fathers came out of the land of Mitsrayim until this day, I have even sent to you all My servants the prophets, daily rising up early and sending them. 26“But they did not obey Me or incline their ear, but stiffened their neck. They did evil, more than their fathers. 27“And you shall speak all these words to them, though they do not listen to you. And you shall also call to them, though they do not answer you. 28“But you shall say to them, ‘This is a nation that did not obey the voice of YHWH their Elohim, nor did they accept instruction. Truth has perished and has been cut off from their mouth.
Here Yah’weh refers to the people in Yerushalayim as backsliders, because they chose to follow their forefather’s hardheaded ways rather than following the commands of the Eternal. The people did not listen to Yah’weh, so “the Truth” had vanished from among them. Lets look to the writings of the prophet Dani’el for his writings on “the Truth”.
“And we have not obeyed the voice of YHWH our Elohim, to walk in His Torot, which He set before us through His servants the prophets. 11“And all Yisra’el have transgressed Your Torah, and turned aside, so as not to obey Your voice. So the curse and the oath written in the Torah of Mosheh the servant of Elohim have been poured out on us, for we have sinned against Him. 12“And He has confirmed His words, which He spoke against us and against our rulers who judged us, by bringing upon us great evil. For under all the heavens there has not been done like what was done to Yerushalayim. 13“As it is written in the Torah of Mosheh, all this evil has come upon us, and we have not entreated the face of YHWH our Elohim, to turn back from our crookednesses, and to study Your truth.
Dani’el writes of the reason the people were led into captivity, the transgression of the Torah. YHWH wanted the people to put the worldly sins out of their lives and return to Him. Studying and keeping His commands, which is His Truth. Lets look to the words of one more prophet to see what is written on the word of Truth.
4“And you shall know that I have sent this command to you, as being My covenant with Lewi,” said YHWH of hosts. 5“My covenant with him was life and peace, and I gave them to him, to fear. And he feared Me, and stood in awe of My Name. 6“The Torah of truth was in his mouth, and unrighteousness was not found on his lips. He walked with Me in peace and straightness, and turned many away from crookedness. 7“For the lips of a priest should guard knowledge, and they seek the Torah from his mouth, for he is the messenger of YHWH of hosts. 8“But you, you have turned from the way, you have caused many to stumble in the Torah. You have corrupted the covenant of Lewi,” said YHWH of hosts. 9“And I also, I shall make you despised and low before all the people, because you are not guarding My ways, and are showing partiality in the Torah.”
Malaki writes of the Torah being Truth and that the messengers of YHWH speak from Torah. Take note that YHWH also admonishes these people for perverting Torah to further their own ends. Lets look at Psalm 119 for one of the best examples of “the Truth” in the writings.
Psalm 119 partial
25My being has been clinging to the dust; Revive me according to Your word. 26I have recounted my ways and You answered me; Teach me Your laws. 27Make me understand the way of Your orders; That I might meditate on Your wonders. 28My being has wept from grief; Strengthen me according to Your word. 29Remove from me the way of falsehood, And favour me with Your Torah. 30I have chosen the way of truth; Your right-rulings I have held level. 31I have clung to Your witnesses; O YHWH, do not put me to shame! 32I run the way of Your commands, For You enlarge my heart. 33Teach me, O YHWH, the way of Your laws, And I observe it to the end. 34Make me understand, that I might observe Your Torah, And guard it with all my heart. 35Make me walk in the path of Your commands, For I have delighted in it. 36Incline my heart to Your witnesses, And not to own gain. 37Turn away my eyes from looking at falsehood, And revive me in Your way.
131I have opened my mouth and panted, For I have longed for Your commands. 132Turn to me and show me favour, According to Your right-ruling, toward those who love Your Name. 133Establish my footsteps by Your word, And let no wickedness have rule over me. 134Redeem me from the oppression of man, That I might guard Your orders. 135Make Your face shine upon Your servant, And teach me Your laws. 136Streams of water have run down from my eyes, Because they did not guard Your Torah. 137Righteous are You, O YHWH, And Your right-rulings are straight. 138You have commanded Your witnesses In righteousness and truth, exceedingly. 139My ardour has consumed me, For my adversaries have forgotten Your words. 140Your word is tried, exceedingly; And Your servant has loved it. 141I am small and despised; I have not forgotten Your orders. 142Your righteousness is righteousness forever, And Your Torah is truth. 143Distress and anguish have found me; Your commands are my delight. 144The righteousness of Your witnesses is forever; Make me understand, that I might live. 145I have called with all my heart; Answer me, O YHWH! I observe Your laws. 146I have called upon You; Save me, that I might guard Your witnesses.
O YHWH, revive me according to Your right-ruling. 150Those who pursue mischief have drawn near; They have been far from Your Torah. 151You are near, O YHWH, And all Your commands are truth. 152Of old I have known Your witnesses, That You have founded them forever. 153See my affliction and deliver me, For I have not forgotten Your Torah. 154Plead my cause and redeem me; Revive me according to Your word. 155Deliverance is far from the wrong ones, For they have not sought Your laws.
These writings show us that keeping the Torah is the “way of Truth”, the Torah itself is Truth, and that YHWH’s commands are Truth. They also tell us that YHWH’s word is the Torah. We now have a good perspective on the definition of Truth when it occurs in the Torah, Prophets, and Writings. Do the apostolic writings give a different definition of Truth? Did Yah’shua do away with the Commands of YHWH? Are we no longer under the Torah? Lets take a look.
Truth in the Apostolic writings
31So Yah’shua said to those Yehudim who believed Him, “If you stay in My Word, you are truly My taught ones, 32and you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” 33They answered Him, “We are the seed of Abraham, and have been servants to no one at any time. How do you say, ‘You shall become free’?” 34Yah’shua answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone doing sin is a servant of sin. 35“And the servant does not stay in the house forever – a son stays forever. 36“If, then, the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed. 37“I know that you are the seed of Abraham, but you seek to kill Me, because My word has no place in you. 38“I speak what I have seen with My Father, and you do what you have heard (seen) from your father.” 39They answered and said to Him, “Abraham is our father.” Yah’shua said to them, “If you were Abraham’s children, you would do the works of Abraham. 40“But now you seek to kill Me, a Man who has spoken to you the truth which I heard from Elohim. Abraham did not do this. 41“You do the works of your father.” Then they said to Him, “We were not born of whoring, we have one Father: Elohim.” 42Yah’shua said to them, “If Elohim were your Father, you would love Me, for I came forth from Elohim, and am here. For I have not come of Myself, but He sent Me. 43“Why do you not know what I say? Because you are unable to hear My Word. 44“You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you wish to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and has not stood in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks the lie, he speaks of his own, for he is a liar and the father of it. 45“And because I speak the truth, you do not believe Me. 46“Who of you proves Me wrong concerning sin? And if I speak the truth, why do you not believe Me? 47“He who is of Elohim hears the Words of Elohim, therefore you do not hear because you are not of Elohim.”
Here Yah’shua is teaching the meaning of “the Truth” which is to follow in his footsteps, keep from sin and keep “the Words” of father YHWH. Lets look at some other examples.
14“I have given them Your Word, and the world hated them because they are not of the world, as I am not of the world. 15“I do not pray that You should take them out of the world, but that You keep them from the wicked one. 16“They are not of the world, as I am not of the world. 17“Set them apart in Your truth – Your Word is truth.18“As You sent Me into the world, I also sent them into the world. 19“And for them I set Myself apart, so that they too might be set apart in truth. 20“And I do not pray for these alone, but also for those believing in Me through their word,
Here Yah’shua confirms that “the Word” of YHWH is Truth. The same words referred to in the writings, which are the Torah and the commands. Lets keep searching.
15Everyone hating his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has everlasting life staying in him. 16By this we have known love, because He laid down His life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers. 17But whoever has this world’s goods, and sees his brother in need, and shuts up his tender affections from him, how does the love of Elohim stay in him? 18My little children, let us not love in word or in tongue, but in deed and in truth. 19And by this we know that we are of the truth, and shall set our hearts at rest before Him, 20that if our heart condemns us, Elohim is greater than our heart, and knows all. 21Beloved ones, if our heart does not condemn us, we have boldness toward Elohim. 22And whatever we ask we receive from Him, because we guard His commands and do what is pleasing in His sight. 23And this is His command, that we should believe in the Name of His Son Yah’shua Messiah and love one another, as He gave us command. 24And the one guarding His commands stays in Him, and He in him. And by this we know that He stays in us, by the Spirit, which He gave us.
A great message, love is the perfection of the Word and Truth of YHWH. Following the commands of the Eternal in our daily lives makes it easier for us to love our fellow man and please our wonderful Creator. Lets look at two more examples.
The elder, to a chosen Kuria and her children, whom I love in truth, and not only I, but also all those who have known the truth, 2because of the truth which stays in us and shall be with us forever: 3Favour, compassion, peace be with you from Elohim the Father, and from the Master Yah’shua Messiah, the Son of the Father, in truth and love. 4I rejoiced greatly because I found some of your children walking in truth, as we received a command from the Father. 5And now I ask you, Kuria, not as though I wrote a fresh command to you, but that which we have had from the beginning: that we love one another. 6And this is the love, that we walk according to His commands. This is the command, that as you have heard from the beginning, you should walk in it.
Love is the fulfillment of the commands, which is why they were created. And as the writings tell us, nothing has changed. We are to love in Truth and live our lives keeping the commands of YHWH. Lets finish up with one more example.
1 John 2:1-7
My little children, I write this to you, so that you do not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Intercessor with the Father, Yah’shua Messiah, a righteous One. 2And He Himself is an atoning offering for our sins, and not for ours only but also for all the world. 3And by this we know that we know Him, if we guard His commands. 4The one who says, “I know Him,” and does not guard His commands, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. 5But whoever guards His Word, truly the love of Elohim has been perfected in him. By this we know that we are in Him. 6The one who says he stays in Him ought himself also to walk, even as He walked. 7Beloved, I write no fresh command to you, but an old command which you have had from the beginning. The old command is the Word which you heard from the beginning.
The message is crystal clear; “the Word” which is the commandments of the Eternal is “the Truth”. Those who do not keep the commands of father YHWH do not have “the Truth” in them. If we love Father YHWH we will keep His Word, which is His commands.
The Way, the Truth, and the Life
T’oma said to Him, “Master, we do not know where You are going, and how are we able to know the way?” 6Yah’shua said to him, “I am the Way, and the Truth, and the Life. No one comes to the Father except through Me. 7“If you had known Me, you would have known My Father too. From now on you know Him, and have seen.” 8Philip said to Him, “Master, show us the Father, and it is enough for us.” 9Yah’shua said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and you have not known Me, Philip? He who has seen Me has seen the Father, and how do you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10“Do you not believe that I am in the Father, and the Father is in Me? The words that I speak to you I do not speak from Myself. But the Father who stays in Me does His works. 11“Believe Me that I am in the Father and the Father in Me, otherwise believe Me because of the works themselves. 12“Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he shall do also. And greater works than these he shall do, because I go to My Father. 13“And whatever you ask in My Name, that I shall do, in order that the Father might be esteemed in the Son. 14“If you ask whatever in My Name, I shall do it. 15“If you love Me, you shall guard My commands. 16“And I shall ask the Father, and He shall give you another Helper, to stay with you forever – 17the Spirit of the Truth, whom the world is unable to receive, because it does not see Him or know Him. But you know Him, for He stays with you and shall be in you. 18“I shall not leave you orphans – I am coming to you. 19“Yet a little while, and the world no longer sees Me, but you shall see Me, because I live, and you shall live. 20“In that day you shall know that I am in My Father, and you in Me, and I in you. 21“He who possesses My commands and guards them, it is he who loves Me. And he who loves Me shall be loved by My Father, and I shall love him and manifest Myself to him.” 22Yehudah – not the one from Qerioth – said to Him, “Master, what has come about that You are about to manifest Yourself to us, and not to the world?” 23Yah’shua answered him, “If anyone loves Me, he shall guard My Word. And My Father shall love him, and We shall come to him and make Our stay with him. 24“He who does not love Me does not guard My Words. And the Word which you hear is not Mine but of the Father Who sent Me. 25“These Words I have spoken to you while still with you. 26“But the Helper, the Set-apart Spirit, whom the Father shall send in My Name, He shall teach you all, and remind you of all that I said to you.
Yah’shua tells us that he is “the Way”; by example he has shown mankind the path that leads to the Father. Yah’shua tells us he is “the Truth”; He has shown us the true intent of the Fathers commands. Yah’shua tells us that he is “the Life”: He has shown us by his example how we are to live our lives, keeping the commands of YHWH and putting out the worldly sin, loving our Father and fellow man, setting an example for all men to see. He also made sure to make it known that these truths were not from him but from the Father. At the end of the verses above you need to make note that Yah’shua told them that the Set-apart spirit would be sent to remind them of ALL he taught them. From the least Command to the greatest, Yah’shua kept them ALL, and he expected his followers, ALL of them, to do the same.
Yah’shua is the voice of our Father, a voice calling to those who will hear. Believe his message, and the spirit of YHWH will safely lead you further each day on the difficult path to Him and His kingdom. We pray that you see “the Truth” of this message and that you maintain a diligent search for Truth.
The Spirit of Truth
7“If you stay in Me, and My Words stay in you, you shall ask whatever you wish, and it shall be done for you. 8“In this My Father is esteemed, that you bear much fruit, and you shall be My taught ones. 9“As the Father has loved Me, I have also loved you. Stay in My love. 10“If you guard My commands, you shall stay in My love, even as I have guarded My Father’s commands and stay in His love. 11“These words I have spoken to you, so that My joy might be in you, and that your joy might be complete. 12“This is My command, that you love one another, as I have loved you….
25but .that the word might be filled which was written in their Torah, ‘They hated Me without a cause.’ 26“And when the Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of the Truth, who comes from the Father, He shall bear witness of Me, 27but you also bear witness, because you have been with Me from the beginning.
12“I still have many words to say to you, but you are not able to bear them now. 13“But when He comes, the Spirit of the Truth, He shall guide you into all the truth. For, but whatever He hears He shall speak, and He shall announce to you what is to come. 14“He shall esteem Me, for He shall take of what is Mine and announce it to you.
The spirit of YHWH guides those who truly want to please our Father. Leading them to the truth, which is keeping His commands and right-rulings.
The Truth and the Unrighteous
16For I am not ashamed of the Good News of Messiah, for it is the power of Elohim for deliverance to everyone who believes, to the Yehudite first and also to the Greek. 17For in it the righteousness of Elohim is revealed from belief to belief, as it has been written, “But the righteous shall live by belief.” 18For the wrath of Elohim is revealed from heaven against all wickedness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, 19because that which is known of Elohim is manifest among them, for Elohim has manifested it to them. 20For since the creation of the world His invisible qualities have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, both His everlasting power and Mightiness, for them to be without excuse, 21because, although they knew Elohim, they did not esteem Him as Elohim, nor gave thanks, but became vain in their reasonings, and their undiscerning heart was darkened. 22Claiming to be wise, they became fools, 23and changed the esteem of the incorruptible Elohim into the likeness of an image of corruptible man, and of birds and of four-footed beasts and of reptiles. 24Therefore Elohim gave them up to uncleanness in the lust of their hearts, to disrespect their bodies among themselves, 25who changed the truth of Elohim into the falsehood, and worshipped and served what was created rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amaen.
We must be on our guard at all times lest we fall into the same trap our brethren fell into. Following after the world instead of looking to the Eternal for guidance. The Commands of YHWH are referred to by many names, we must watch for them and apply the True meaning when we study and read. The following is by no means a complete list but does contain many of the most frequently used words.
37Then Pilate said to Him, “You are a sovereign, then?” Yah’shua answered, “You say it, because I am a sovereign. For this I was born, and for this I have come into the world, that I should bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice.”
